November 12th will be the 5th anniversary of the phenomenon known as World Usability Day: an event founded to ensure that the services and products important to life are easier to access and simpler to use. Each year, on the second Thursday of the month of November, it has a specific focus and is participated in around the world. For World Usability Day 2008, more than 40,000 people in 180 cities in 43+ countries participated. This year’s theme is Sustainability.
By focusing on Sustainability as this year’s WUD theme, the team hopes to apply their professional expertise as usability and user experience practitioners to improve the quality of human life (the fundamental goal of usability), while living within the capacity and constraints of our environmental, social, and economic systems.
The Vancouver User Experience Group (VanUE) will be working with the with the Pine Street Community Garden in a 16 hour “design slam.” By the end of the day, the team will have solutions and proposals. All of this will be compiled and prepared to present to the larger Vancouver User Experience Group on November 17th . After spending the morning collecting information, observing etc, the team gathers at The Network Hub from 12:30 – 8:30 pm. Here they will share their findings, brainstorm and create solutions. The Network Hub space was thought of to be the ideal space for collaboration and execution of the great ideas that this team will have.
The public presentation of the approach, problems and solutions will be shared at the VanUE event on November 17th from 6 – 7:30 pm. (www.vanue.com)
