#NEWWEST Technology & Business Meetup Speaker for January: Nick Romick
Everyone, meet Nick Romick, the next keynote speaker for the New West Technology and Business Meetup. He is the President of VanCG Meetup and the Systems Administrator for Method Studios, a visual effects company based out of Vancouver. For all you astrology fans out there, Nick is a Leo. We conducted a short interview to get to know Nick more before the upcoming New West Technology and Business Meetup on February 18th at The Network Hub at River Market.
How did the VanCG meetup start?
“I was at the Network Hub in New Westminster for Beer Friday, and I was talking to Jay about how there isn’t any VFX meetups around for people to attend. Jay simply suggested that I should start one. In 2012, I organized the first VFX meetup at the New Westminster Network Hub and over 100 people attended. It started to become a monthly thing.”
What do you enjoy most about the visual effects industry?
“I love working on awesome shows and VFX movies. I love to see the whole process, to see how they do it. I didn’t understand the whole process before, but now it’s so cool.”
What is your role as System Administrator at Method Studios?
“Putting it simply, I’m a mediator between over 400 artists, pipeline, IT, facilities and software development. For example, if there are any issues with the modelling, I make sure I contact the right department to address the correct issue.”
What is your main role as President of VanCG?
“Training new members, idea generation for events, delegating and managing tasks. I want VanCG to expand, we’d have to start hiring full-time and part-time positions soon and do more contests.”
What’s the most fulfilling project that you remember the most?
“Working on Avengers: Age of Ultron. My son is two and half years old and he loves the Avengers. I love Iron Man and looking at the VFX behind the scenes.”
What key advice you can give to people aspiring to a career in visual effects?
“Network with people. It’s who you know. Pick out what specific role you want to do and focus on it. Employers want to know what you can do and exactly where you want to be.”
What did you want to be when you were a little kid?
“I remember wanting to be a filmmaker. I used to make little action movies with my dad’s camera back in 1992 and we’d play with various effects.”
What do you like to do on your spare time?
“I like travelling, snowboarding and road trips. I also like working on my own personal VFX projects. I may sound like a workaholic, but I enjoy it a lot.”
Come to the next New West Technology and Business Meetup on February 18th at the Network Hub. Nick will be the keynote speaker and he will be talking about how to create a community and how to gather support for your projects. Nick launched a large open movie project with over 30 artists, 20 actors and accumulated over 20 major sponsors (Electronic Arts, The Foundry, Autodesk, Microsoft, etc.) without investing any money into it.
